Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877)
Clipped signature from a Selma, Marion & Memphis Railroad bond. Signature is on a panel of the bond which 4 1/2" high by 8 " wide and is darkly penned in brown ink. $1,695. Full bond available at $3,300. [The railroad bonds are now basically the most affordable format for obtaining an authentic Forrest signature with no risk of deception. Forrest served as president of this railroad and then resigned as a result of the Panic of 1873, a national crisis which nonetheless severely impacted many businesses, banks and railroads across the south. The 1873 debacle struck in the midst of Reconstruction woes, a period in which civil liberties had been severely restricted by federal authorities and a lack of liquidity in the south weakened any entrepreneurial venture such as that by Forrest and his associates. The Selma, Marion and Memphis Railroad had been started by Confederate general Gideon Pillow and thus this enterprise was strongly imbued with the energy and vision of southern military men whose role in the war had reduced their wealth, status and opportunities.]
