CSA Bond No. Cr-7A  (Ball Type 7)

$500.  1862.  Arabic “500” centered in ornate green scroll to emphasize value.  Eight percent coupon bond.  Maturity date:  September 1, 1871.   Green-overprinted $50 coupons.  Printed on thin paper infused with red, silk fibers.      American Bank Note Company, New Orleans.  Same as “7” above, with “Sinking fund” clause printed on back in blue ink as a fiduciary guarantee.   (The equivalent of a modern-day FDIC guarantee of safety.)  7A is one of the nine types of CSA bonds issued from Montgomery, Alabama, prior to the relocation of the capital to Richmond, Virginia, in May, 1861.  Much larger numbers of financial instruments such as bonds and currency were issued from Richmond during the next four years of the war.  Thus, the “Montgomery” imprint on bonds and currency is highly prized and becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.  No bonds of this type are known to exist with full coupons.  F/VF $195.

CSA Bond No. 93  (Ball Type 95)

$1,000.  1861.  Beautiful, scarce bond featuring Liberty with stylized CSA flag and ships in background.  Printed on bright, white paper.  Engraved by Evans & Cogswell, Charleston, SC, and printed by Blanton Duncan, Columbia, SC.  # issued:  2,176.  Signed by Robert Tyler.  Rarity 4.  17 coupons attached, yielding 8 percent interest, or $40, payable every six months.  Overall, a superb document, with three light folds which are barely visible from the front.  This bond is encapsulated in high-quality, acid-free mylar for long-term preservation or storage.  However, the mylar can be easily removed so that the bond can be framed, if desired. XF++  $225.

CSA Bond No. Cr-111  (Ball Type 121)

CSA Bond No. 111, Battle of Shiloh

$500.  1862. Main vignette of Christopher G. Memminger, CSA secretary of the treasury, superimposed over a pictorial representation of the Battle of Shiloh.  Lithographed by B. (Blanton) Douglas, Columbia, SC.   Eight percent coupon bond.   $20 coupons, with a scene of a tent and a South Carolina flag, near a palmetto tree and the shields of liberty and valor.  Only a tiny few CSA bonds were printed with coupons which depicted a visual scene.  Number issued:  about 5,500.  Two coupons pinned to bottom of bond with original Civil War pin.  $210.

CSA Bond No. 120  (Ball Type 212)

CSA Bond No. 120, $100. Archer & Daly, Richmond, VA.

$100.  1863.  CSA officer gazing over the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, VA.  Steamboat at bottom.  (Archer & Daly, Richmond, VA).  Seven percent coupon bond.  Act of February 20, 1863.  Seven coupons attached.  Coupon value:  $3.  Signed by Robert Tyler, CSA register of the treasury. (Some bonds of this type were signed by C. S. Rose.) Printed on dark, pink paper.   Date of issue:  June 9, 1863 -- January 17, 1864.  About 31,000 issued.  $75.

CSA Bond No. 142  (Ball Type 296)

CSA Bond No. 142, lst series, 60 coupons (full bond)

$100.  1864. Equestrian statue of George Washington, with six CSA flags and motto "Deo Vindice."  This is a scarce $100 First Series issue, full-coupon bond.   All 60 coupons remain attached(Number issued:  About 9,500.)  The equestrian bond was issued in three affordable denominations:  $1,000; $500 and $100.  The $100 denomination is seldom seen due to the limited number printed and circulated.   Engraved by J. Archer, Richmond, VA and printed by Evans & Cogswell, Columbia, SC.  Minor tears in bottom left margin and tiny corner missing at bottom right, not affecting coupons.  Black type over rich, pink-orange surface.  VF+/XF.  $245.
